FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Why do I need to "convert" my press?
A: In the early 1970s, prior to OSHA coming into existence, press manufacturers used extension springs in the clutch mechanisms of punch presses. When OSHA went into effect, they specified the use of compression springs in the clutch mechanisms of presses. With the conversion of your present press to the "new style" clutch mechanism you will be bringing your press up to the present day quality and standards.

Q: How do I know if my press requires the conversion?
A: You will not be able to determine if your press requires the conversion at a glance. You should have to remove the full flywheel-v-belt-motor pulley guard to be able to see the clutch components and the springs. Then you can compare the clutch of your press to the clutch pictures shown for identification. (Make sure you observe all lockout/tag out requirements prior to removing the guard and that the guard is replaced prior to placing the press back into operation.)

Q: What are the advantages to converting my press to the current standard?
A: You will have a press comparable to today's quality Alva Allen Punch Presses, provided your bearings and ram ways are accurate and not unevenly worn. Also, it has come to our attention that the extension springs are a possible citation from OSHA. By converting your current press to the new style clutch, you will have access to our large inventory of repair parts right off the shelf.

Q: What is required to convert a press?
A: Alva Allen Industries, Inc. offers a conversion package which contains all components necessary to convert your press to our current production model. There may be some drilling and tapping required to install the clutch components.

Q: What information do I need to supply to obtain a quotation for the conversion?
A:: The Model of the press, i.e., B2, BT5, etc. and the Serial Number for the press. The Serial Number is located on the left hand side of the main frame in the circle created by "Alva Allen Industries, Inc. - Clinton, Missouri U.S.A." in the approximately 1/2" tall rectangular box. The serial number will be stamped directly into the main frame casting and will consist of (3) letters and (5) numbers. With this information we can ensure that we supply you with the correct conversion package quotation.

Q: Can the conversion be done in my facility?
A: Yes, the conversion can be done at your facility or the press may be returned to us for quick and easy conversion.

Q: Can I send my press back to the factory and have the conversion completed there?
A: Yes. Alva Allen Industries, Inc. can complete the conversion for you in our facility. Also, we will check the other components of the press and give you the option of replacing them if any wear or looseness is detected.
